Presenter: Tamta Khalvashi

Title of the work: Emptiness: Ways of Seeing. The Jarti Gleaners

The University of Oxford.
An Art Exhibition.

Dates: 28/09/2021-1/10/2021

This collective multimedia artwork is assembled through an experimental method of inquiry, which I devised specifically for this project to collect ethnography of scrap metal gatherers in times of pandemic restrictions. I call this method an accidental ethnography in which not only ethnographers, but also various citizens are involved in accidentally noticing and capturing with their own mobile phones scrap metal gleaners or what in Georgian is called Jartis Shemogreveblebi in various cities of Georgia. Gleaning here is a form of emptying the cities from abandoned Soviet infrastructures. For post-Soviet infrastructural breakdown created spaces of emptiness and ruination, affording various forms of gleaning and reuse. I thus see infrastructural breakdown not as an absence or a lack of presence, but as a possibility of re-presence, rework and repair. Scrap metal collection in Tbilisi is an unannounced form of reuse and repair in times of material and societal breakdown.
