
Plants that are inherently territory classifying beings can be used to classify territory. Green spaces have the potential of marking and reclaiming the territory, embody resistance, and control. Facing predatory interests, people activate “hidden transcripts” for the production and reappropriation of places. The talk analyzed the relational agency of humans and plants during the Soviet times focusing on two trees: Zelkovas and Mulberries. This article’s focus is on the experience of the creative usage of strategies (laws) established by the state. By analyzing the laws and practices, the research shows how trees protected for their rarity/antiquity or their special productivity are creatively used to claim spaces.
