The Soviet City as an Ideological Space

The Association for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) – 2021 Annual Convention.

December 3, 2021.

In the past decades, Tbilisi had to face many challenges caused by political, social, and economic changes. In Soviet times, socialist ideology completely changed the city, taking it from non-linear to linear model. The city’s natural formation process was rejected by the Soviet authorities, instead focusing on structured and planned-out process. In order to draw a parallel between the closed/open city system and the Soviet city planning characteristics, I analyse Tbilisi city development from 1934, one particular area in the city together with its elite housing unit, where architecture and its location played an important role in urban setting formation processes and describes well the influence of Soviet ideology – the communist doctrine. I will address some of the reasons why this might be the case, as well as the ideological background of the building itself, its architectural, as well as cultural and social values.
